Match the format to the contents
PNG uses lossless compression and can preserve transparency. It is useful for screenshots, graphics and logos. JPG uses lossy compression and has no transparent channel.
WebP can provide compact files and transparency, but export mode and quality matter. Renaming an extension is insufficient: the image must be encoded in the chosen format.
Transparency and quality
Converting a transparent image to JPG requires an opaque background. Check edges and text against it, especially in logos.
Lower JPG or WebP quality may lose details or introduce artifacts. Converting an already compressed JPG to PNG does not recover lost information and can enlarge the file.
- Open the image and inspect its dimensions.
- Choose a format compatible with your intended use.
- Convert and compare size and appearance with the original.
- Check transparency, small text and gradients.
Metadata and compatibility
Browser exports may alter or remove metadata and color profiles. Do not assume every camera, location or author field is preserved.
Test the image in its destination application. Keep the original and compare the download: an output is not necessarily smaller.
